Captain Cannabis: 420 Screenplay

Captain Cannabis: 420 Screenplay

While Verne created Captain Cannabis® in the seventies when the future looked bright, his infamous 420 comic book sets out on an updated telling at a time when the internet was new and the "war on terror" was beginning. 9/11, and the subsequent surveillance state it enabled, has been a boon to the war on drugs and culture, which things like Captain Cannabis comic books unfortunately get caught up in.

While the original Captain Cannabis series began as comic books in 1975, this "420 Screenplay" is the result of years of subsequent research and development that went into creating the complex Captain Cannabis multi-universe since. Unlike other "superhero" characters, I worked tirelessly to ensure what happens in the story has some basis in "reality," albeit an alternative one as my research bore out.

While principally a fantasy piece, the story blends science fiction, dark comedy and gritty realism into an adventure that's just plain fun. With a nod to The Fabulous Furry Freak Bros. and Fritz The Cat, we follow the misadventures of an aging and cosmic-pot-induced-memory-impaired Hal Lighter as he re-discovers the intragalactic herb that transforms him into superhero Captain Cannabis to try and save the day.

This 420 Screenplay contains the entire story the 420 comic book is part of; the 420 comic book is the first 10 pages of this screenplay.

An on-going work-in-process I illustrated the entire screenplay as storyboards and built an animatic of the film, which comes in around 2 hours viewing time. (An animatic is a very rough of still images to a rough audio track to "sketch" out the film). I've continued refining the story, enlisting Hollywood A-list script consultant Linda Seger who has been immensely helpful as the saga evolves.
